SUBTITLES
Settings and help for reading this service your way.
PLAIN MODE
Plain mode turns off the CRT picture, the connection sequence, the moving newsflash and all sound. Text switches to a plain, high-contrast face. Your choice is kept on this device.
With scripts on, you can also add ?plain=1 to any page address, or ?plain=0 to switch it back.
REDUCED MOTION
If your device asks for reduced motion, the CRT picture, the connection sequence, the ticker and the tones stay off automatically.
SOUND
Sound is off unless you turn it on. When on, keying a page number plays a keypad tone. Browsers allow sound only after you press a key or tap, so the connection sequence is usually silent.
Plain mode and reduced motion keep sound off, whatever this switch says.
KEYPAD SHORTCUTS
Typing digits anywhere keys a page number, and 1 to 4 on their own press the coloured keys. If that gets in the way of your keyboard or speech input, switch the shortcuts off. The page number box at the top and every link keep working.
KEYS
| KEY | DOES |
|---|---|
| 0-9 × 3 | Go to that page number (when keypad shortcuts are on) |
| 1-4 alone | Coloured key (when keypad shortcuts are on). It fires after a short pause, so a second digit can still start a page number. |
| Esc | Cancel a page number being keyed |
| Tab | Move between links and controls |
| Any key | Skip the connection sequence |
